One reason we travel is to break the misconceptions people have about certain countries and the world. The world is not a scary place as some people make it out to be. We have felt safe in countries that people warned us about and we had moments we felt unsafe in places that are considered safe. For example, the US media likes to paint Mexico as a scary place with a lot of crime. But when we visited Mexico last year there wasn't a moment on our entire trip that we didn't feel safe. The reality was that the locals were so warm and kind and crime was at a minimum. Of course there are areas in Mexico that really do have problems with crime and drug trafficking but that doesn't mean that you can label the entire country as dangerous or scary.
